Castle Hedingham Cross
Castle Hedingham Cross submitted by Thorgrim : Saxon cross shaft with later Norman carving. The design to the right has been completed, but the carving on the left is shallow and was never finished. Pre-Norman crosses are extremly rare in East Anglia. The cross on top of the shaft is modern. (Vote or comment on this photo)
This is a remarkable cross. It appears to be unique in that it is a Saxon cross that has had Norman decoration cut into it.

The shaft is carved on four sides with Saxon bosses on the chamfered edges. However, the Norman work was left unfinished. In East Anglia, most crosses were destroyed at the Reformation or by Cromwell's Puritans. This very rare survival was found hidden in the cellar of an old coaching inn - the Falcon. It may once have stood on the village green which is still known as Crouch Green (from "cruc" Anglo-Saxon for cross). It has now been restored and set up in the churchyard.
