White Hill, Suffolk
White Hill, Suffolk submitted by coypu : White hill, easy access from rear of industrial estate. Lots of bunnies in residence. (Vote or comment on this photo)
A round barrow discovered in recent years following the felling of forestry in Thetford Forest. Unfortunately, a footpath was cut clean through the middle of the central mound in the 1970s. It is a large earthwork - an inner mound, outer mound, and a large ring ditch. The barrow stands to a height of approximately 3m. It measures about 75m north east-south west by 57m north west-south east, and is surrounded by a berm up to 22m wide and a ditch.

On an old park survey map, it was covered by a woods called 'Whitehill Plantation'. It is a lucky survivor as ring ditches do not normally survive in the local sandy soils.

Cut right through by FC in early 1970s, ditch filled with building rubble (even drainpipe eroding out). Inspection by EH yielded no action at that time, although it was scheduled in 1998. Rainfall and dog digging creates metre high cliff edges on top, visibly eroding the sandy mound. Absolute disgrace. Loss of this uniquely large barrow by inaction may be inevitable.
