Gillingham Stone circle submitted by Andy B : I visited on Saturday 13th April, could these have come from a lost stone circle? I'm not totally convinced. What do you think? (Vote or comment on this photo)
The map of 1869 shows a stone circle near the church of Mary Madgalen in Gillingham. This has now been destroyed and it was was absent from the first OS maps. However, the stones may have possibly been relocated as curbing along an area of green space nearby.

There are 19 of these, a likely stone circle number, and they were rediscovered by Mr. L. Peters in the 90s. Page and text originally by HOLYWELL.

Is it probable/possible they might be reinstated? Or at least, labelled in some way as to show the origin of the stones?

I doubt it, the whole thing is pretty speculative to be honest but interesting nonetheless. A close examination of the stones there might show if they had been standing with one end in the ground in the past.

See my most recent photos. To me they don't look like one end of any was ever in the ground. Do they?

A friend pointed this out to me way before it was mentioned by Mr. L. Peters. He had known about the stones for quite a while as being a long term resident of Gillingham he was well aware of the local landmarks.
As far as I remember from what he said, the stones were found during building/road works in the area and then used as decoration on the green.
He wondered if they had belonged to a megalithic tomb.
Had a quick look to see if I could locate on line the 1869 map. I found one on this site although it takes a bit of searching to find the Church.

http://www.old-maps.co.uk/indexmappage2.aspx

Was unable to spot a Stone circle on it though. There was a circular feature near Bachelors Cottage but it's not named as anything.
The stones in Gillingham are mentioned either in a book by F. Russell Clampitt called The Coldrum Line (1993, 1898188009) or the Leslie J Peters book Gads Hill ley (published by the author in 1999).
They are both slim paperback books, and were published locally so they might not be easily available.
The Medway library service does have copies but I don't think they are for lone, they wern't when I was working there.
They can be found on the Library catalogue :
