Holy Well or Sacred Spring in Kent

Here is an ancient well corrupted to Goosewell, although its ancient name may have been either Holy Ghost Well or God’s Well although this is debatable. It now lays behind the main street of Linton, and was until the 1920s, its major water supply. Being thought as a holy well, it is not surprisingly accredited with unspecified curative powers. Moreover, it is more locally well known for being associated with a local witch, Old Bess, who lived in a house, in front of the well, performing black magic. local historian Iggleseden (1901-1946) states that she was forced away from the well because of the risk of contamination, and finally ousted from the village by the then vicar. She is said to have moved not far to the edge of Boughton Monchelsea Estate, where a number of witches were said to reside. Sadly, little ancient work now remains of the well, being sold to local waterworks. It is now denoted by a crude course of brick walling together with a number of drain covers. Beside the footpath, and opposite this, flowing water can be heard from beneath a drain cover.
