Holy Well or Sacred Spring in Essex.
The village has an interesting, but little known site, which is called the Lady or Ladies Well. This is a now a rather boggy and insignificant pool surrounded by some dead elms.

It lays along an old carthorse track, now simply a footpath in field near The Rectory. This is reached by taking the road between the two white houses and up the hill. The footpath is signed off this road.
Local traditions suggests that the name of the well derives from the fact that it was haunted by the ghost of a wealthy lady. She is said to have drowned after being thrown from her carriage whilst passing along the track on night. Yet, it would appear to a secularisation of an obvious holy well. Perhaps the ghost is more a folk memory of this christian dedication or even the pagan deity which preceded it?
