Saffron Walden Museum
Saffron Walden Museum submitted by Thorgrim : Collection of bronze socketed axes (Vote or comment on this photo)
Museum in Essex

Local museum of the highest quality. In addition to local social history and a superb Ethnography Gallery, the museum houses a well laid out "Ages of Man" archaeology gallery. The archaeology collection commences with Ice Age mammoth fossils and Palaeolithic hand axes and tools. There is a fine collection of Bronze Age socketed axes. Later periods from the Iron Age through the Romano-British, Saxon, Viking, Norman and Medieval to the present. Two Saxon skeletons are a great attraction beneath glass panels set into the floor

Currently there is a temporary exhibition featuring finds unearthed during the laying of Transco's Cambridge to Matching Green pipeline.

Open every day of the year except Christmas day. Admission charge is £1
