Holy Well / Spring in Kent

Found in the centre of Kemsing. The notice says: "St. Edith of Kemsing 961-984 This well lay within the precincts of the convent where St. Edith, daughter of King Edgar, passed her childhood, hallowed by her presence its waters became a source of healing." The Holy & Healing Wells web page for this well says that the water was used to sooth eyes.

The well is also recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 409448, which tells us "The stone enclosure walls are modern but the stonework lining the well itself is probably medieval".

The Journal of Antiquities features an entry for this well - see St Edith’s Well, Kemsing, Kent, which features a description, a photograph, plus background information about St. Edith. The Journal adds: "indeed soreness and irritation of the eyes has been cured here and the well has been a place of pilgrimage since medieval times."

Easy to find and information on site. its such a shame that you cant draw water from it. A bucket on a rope would be nice.

My name is Liz Mcdermott and I am a WI Adviser for Kent West. This morning 16th September 2012, I attended the dressing of St Edith's Well Kemsing organised by the President of Kemsing WI Heather Porter. the dressing plaque similiar to those that dress the wells in Derbyshire was superb and the villagers had been invited to help with the construction of the picture using flower petal seed and other natural media the finished article was a delight.
I am sending a photo which hopefully will be poste on the site along with my comments

From Pastscape:

"St. Edith's Well in the centre of Kemsing village is said to have
healing properties. The stone enclosure walls are modern but the
stonework lining the well itself is probably medieval.

St. Edith's Well is as described above and is maintained in good
condition. A nearby plaque carries the following notice.
"St. Edith of Kemsing 961-984.

This well lay within the precincts
of the Covent where St. Edith, daughter of King Edgar, passed her
childhood. Hallowed by her presence, its waters became a source of
healing".
No documentary evidence has been found to support the claim for the
Convent at Kemsing.

"The Chapel of St. Edith the virgin, is mentioned in an Otford will
of 1419".
Not mentioned in The Buildings of England. "

Re: St Edith's Well by Anonymous on Wednesday, 01 July 2009
Our family together with my brother in law and part of his family while visiting my cousins who are native to Kemsing visited this delightful well summer, 1994, when it was still flowing. Nearby is a large campus housing buildings for the Blind Charity of England, which neatly fits with the use of holy water from St. Edith's Well being to heal the eyes, as noted above. A quant historic site.

Re: St Edith's Well by Anonymous on Sunday, 08 April 2007
The spring feeding the well has apparently been dry for quite a number of years, but just this last month (March/April 2007) has started running again. The well is still a bit choked with growth and some rubbish has been dumped, but I have spoken with a few of the locals and hopefully(!) it will be cleaned up soon, and flowing cleanly again.
