Round Barrow in Lincolnshire.

Archaeologists have unearthed the tiny skeleton of a 3,500-year-old baby at a quarry near Peterborough, in Eastern England.

The discovery was made close to the centre of a Bronze Age burial mound at Pode Hole - a sprawling gravel quarry west of the village of Thorney, which is about eight miles east of Peterborough.

The researchers say the find, coming just two months after the discovery of well preserved remains of a Bronze Age man 50 metres away, points to the existence of an ancient cemetery.

Lake plan prompts call for archaeological dig by Andy B on Monday, 26 November 2007
(User Info | Send a Message)
There are calls to launch a detailed Bronze Age excavation if planning permission to create a vast reservoir in the Fens is granted.
The 220-metre wide and 520-metre long lake would provide water to irrigate carrot, onion, potato, sugar beet and wheat crops on farmland south of Thorney.

However, the proposed lake would be situated between Flag Fen Bronze Age Centre and Pode Hole Quarry, where summer excavations have unearthed two 3,500-year-old skeletons.

It raises hopes that the earmarked land off Willow Hall Lane could contain a treasure trove of Bronze Age remains.

A report by an archaeological officer, asked to comment on the application by Peterborough City Council, said: "The proposed development lies within an area of archaeological importance. There is a network of Bronze Age enclosures, tracks and water holes, a possible timber walkway and at least one burial mound."

The officer has requested that a full programme of archaeological excavation be carried out before work on creating the reservoir starts.

Although the application has been recommended for approval by council planning chiefs, a condition is likely to be imposed to ensure such a programme is initiated.

Flag Fen general manager Georgia Butters said: "Developments such as these offer an excellent opportunity to survey Bronze Age remains that we would otherwise have no knowledge of.

"Flag Fen was the ritual hub of a massive Bronze Age settlement and the surrounding area is surprisingly rich in archaeology, from Neolithic barrows to Bronze Age and Roman remains."
Eye and Thorney councillor John Bartlett said: "I am a member of Pode Hole Liaison Committee, and it is amazing what remains are found there. I expect similar things will be discovered around this site."

Cllr Bartlett said he also hoped a sum of Section 106 planning money, which is given by developers to communities, would be secured to enable the Green Wheel cycle network to be extended to Thorney.

The 196,650 cubic metre reservoir would irrigate crops grown on Willow Hall Farm and Briggs Farm.

As a comparison, the reservoir would be half the length of the rowing lake in Peterborough, but twice the width.

There are lots of scheduled barrows to the south of Pode Hole Farm, I think one of these must be the actual location that is being talked about in the article. Click on the Magic Map icon above to see them.

It's probably not worth adding them individually to the Portal unless someone wants to go and photograph them but for now here they are:
