Enchanted Rock
Enchanted Rock submitted by bat400 : Enchanted Rock. Huge pink granite dome in Texas Hill Country. Tool finds indicate habitation near here for 10,000 years. The site was considered sacred by native people. Photo by bat400, April 2007. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Sacred Site, Natural Stone in Llano County, Texas.
One imagines the first Texans were as awestruck by Enchanted Rock as people are today. The huge pink granite dome rises 600 feet above much shorter rolling hills. Guides to the area attribute part of the mystique of Enchanted Rock to the sounds it makes. After long hot summer days the rock groans, creaks, and moans as it cools down at night.

Stone tool finds indicate that central Texas has been inhabited by man for over 10,000 years. The Tonkawa people who lived here when the Spanish first came into the area believed the rock to be frequented by the spirits of warriors, who appeared as ghostly flames. The Tonkawa were displaced in later times by the Comanche and the Apache, both groups holding the rock in great reverence and awe.

A Texas Natural Area, the site is so popular with hikers that on weekends during good weather the admission to the site is limited to help prevent damage to the fragile ecosystems that surround the dome. Camping and picnicking areas are available. The site is very popular with bird watchers. When we visited in April, spring rains filled shallow creek beds surrounding the rock, and all low places were covered in short, fresh green and tiny wildflowers. Late into drier periods, pools as small as a bootprint remain and support fairy shrimp and tiny plants.
