Teotihuacan - Pyramid of the Moon
Teotihuacan - Pyramid of the Moon submitted by LivingRocks : The Pyramid of the Moon from the Pyramid of the Sun. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Pyramid in Mexico. The Pyramid of the Moon is the second largest of the two main pyramids of Teotihuacan. At 140 feet tall its top is roughly level with that of the taller Pyramid of the Sun because of its situation on higher ground. The pyramid was completed by about 250 AD.

The name was given by the Aztecs on their finding of the city, long after the collapse of the original Teotihuacan culture.

The pyramid was built in several construction phases, each one substantially enlarging the structure from an original small temple. Excavations since 1999 have discovered sacrificial burials (both animal and human) associated with each building phase.

Note: Greenstone effigy originally found in the Pyramid of the Moon, Teotihuacan, restored for museum show.

Restored Teotihuacan Effigy Exhibited at National Museum of Anthropology by bat400 on Tuesday, 11 August 2009
(User Info | Send a Message)
Submitted by coldrum ---
More than 300 greenstone tiles found inside the Moon Pyramid originated a human sculpture that gives testimony of the esthetic cannons of the ancient Teotihuacan culture. The effigy is one of the emblematic pieces of the exhibition “Teotihuacan. Ciudad de los Dioses” (Teotihuacan, City of Gods), open until late August in the National Museum of Anthropology (MNA). Fragments were found in 2004 by archaeologists from the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) associated to the Burial 6 of the pyramid. Specialist thought the pieces were part of a mask.

Dated near 300 AD and made out of serpentine, reconstruction of the “Anthropomorphic Figure” was an arduous work directed by restorer Laura Filloy Nadal, from the MNA Conservation Laboratory.
The figure also has fragments of calcite, dolomite, jade and obsidian that form eyes, lips, and jewelry such as earpieces and necklace.

Restoration of the representation of a high rank character or warrior began with photographic register in situ of the pieces in order to specify the place of each piece. Fragments have different sizes, from a millimeter to 3 centimeters that formed a torso, arms and a pair of earpieces. Carbonized fragments that might have been a support were also found.

Another sculpture restored by INAH to be exhibited at the Teotihuacan show is the “Xalla Captive”, the greatest anthropomorphic representation of the exhibit, was carved in marble and gives account of ritual and intentional destruction performed by ancient Teotihuacan people, since it presents burns and cuts.

The exhibition will be open until the end of August 2009 at the National Museum of Anthropology. The virtual visit is available at Instituto Nacional de Antropología website.

Teotihuacan Remains' DNA: Foreigners sacrificed by bat400 on Monday, 16 April 2007
(User Info | Send a Message)
MEXICO CITY - Ancient Mexicans brought human sacrifice victims from hundreds of miles away over centuries to sanctify a pyramid in the oldest city in North America, an archaeologist said Wednesday.

DNA tests on the skeletons of more than 50 victims discovered in 2004 in the Pyramid of the Moon at the Teotihuacan ruins revealed they were from faraway Mayan, Pacific or Atlantic coastal cultures.

The bodies, many of which were decapitated, dated from between A.D. 50 and 500, and were killed at different times to dedicate new stages of construction of the pyramid just north of Mexico City.

The victims were likely either captured in war or obtained through some kind of diplomacy, said archaeologist Ruben Cabrera, who led the excavation at the pyramid.
