The Standing Rock Hill Historic Site in North Dakota contains four Native American burial mounds. These conical mounds can contain up to 35 individuals. The mounds are sacred to many American Indians and are protected by law from disturbance. They are dated from 100 BCE to 600 CE.

The Standing Rock Reservation is located in southwest North Dakota on the North Dakota/South Dakota border. The reservation covers 3,625 square miles and is home to approximately 8,600 people. The population is 78% Indian and 22% non-Indian. The Standing Rock Reservation is one of seven reservations created for the Sioux Indians. The people of Standing Rock are members of the Dakota and Lakota nations. The term "Sioux" dates back to the 17th century when the people lived in the Great Lakes area.

The Standing Rock Reservation is the birthplace of Sitting Bull (1831-1890), a medicine man and leader of the people.[1]

The site is two miles east of Little Yellowstone Park, near Enderlin, Ransom County. The access road to the site climbs a steep hill and access depends on weather and road conditions. There is a gravel parking lot at the top of the hill. A monument beside the mounds gives a brief description of the significance of this prehistoric cemetery.[2]
