Cholula submitted by AlexHunger : Temples underneath Cholula Pyramid. Note stele at center. Scanned pictures from 1982 Sadly, the church built on top offended my sense of aesthetics, so that I did not take a photo of the entire large mound. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Pyramid in Puebla State, Mexico.
The Cholula Archaeological Zone marks the location of the pre-Conquest city and pilgrimage site. The pyramid there is considered the largest in Mexico, and stands now without its cladding.
The pre-Contact city was sacked in 1519 by Cortes, his followers, and an army of Tlaxcala allies.

Ancient Pyramid that lost its cladding. There is now a church on top. Passages can be explored, where you can see the different layers. Around the large mound, you can see the remains of temples. There is a large stone head and a an exquisite stele. The construction consists of loose material. It was the largest pyramid in Mexico. The location given is for the pyramid ruins.
