Zempoala is one of the finest Pre-Columbian archaeological sites in area of Veracruz. The name of the site means "place of 20 waters", what refers to large number of rivers in the nearby. Zempoala, the capital of Totonacs, is also well-known for being an ally of Hernan Cortes in his campaign against Aztecs since year 1519. The town was abandoned in 17th century after epidemic disaster.

Preserved buildings of Zempoala come mostly from years 1300 - 1500 AD, being an example of Post-Classic architecture, however the first settlement here was founded by Olmecs in Pre-Classic period. The most important monuments are three sacred rings (there are theories about their astronomical importance), Great Temple, Temple of the Chimneys, Temple of Charity and significant number of ceremonial platforms.
