Tres Zapotes
Tres Zapotes submitted by SolarMegalith : Site in Veracruz Mexico Remains of Olmec cult centre is Tres Zapotes (photo taken in 2005). (Vote or comment on this photo)
Ancient Settlement in Veracruz. Tres Zapotes was one of the most important Olmec centres - it's occupation started aroud 1500 year BC, while the period of heyday was between 1200 and 1000 year BC. Tres Zapotes was probably functioning longer then other Olmec centres, such as La Venta and San Lorenzo.

The excavations brought extraordinary examples of Olmec art, with sculptures as most spectacular ones (inlucluding famous Olmec heads carved in volcanic rocks). The remains of Tres Zapotes are in relatively poor condition now, preserved as group of large mounds, but the most important sculptures are gathered in small museum in the centre of the village. The easiest way to reach Tres Zapotes is minibus from Santiago Tuxtla.
