Ancient Town in Cherokee County. The site was founded by the Hasinai Caddo around 800AD - 1300AD. There are three visible mounds, two platform mounds and a burial mound. The site also includes a portion of the the adjacent village. The size and population of the Caddo Mounds town reached its peak around 1100 AD, as part of the larger Mississippian Culture of the southeastern United States. Two of the mounds date from this time period, and the other reached its peak size in this period.
The location given is for the museum and visitor center. Caddo Mounds is a Texas State Historical site.
The Caddo culture is identified from 800 AD, into the contact period, and on to the modern Caddo Nation, their government being headquartered in Binger, Oklahoma. The mound building activities of the culture date from the 800's to the 1300's.
