This is the Largest , most complete and most restored Ahu on Easter Island. The site was restored (by the Japanese) with all the moai in correct position. Some of the topknots were replaced and some are still awaiting placement.

Apparently when the cranes were trying to replace the topknots, it was too windy for them to do so. Just proves how resourceful the original builders were, bearing in mind that some of these topknots were taller than a man. (see Puna Pau).

Apparently the ruined ahu was further damaged by a hurricane in (1960s?) and the moai fragments were moved several hundred metres from their original position. Careful inspection of old photographs were enough to ensure the correct replacement of the moai during the restoration.

I was he Field Director of the Tongariki restoration or better reconstruction (19 92-1995). The monument was not restored by the Japanese but by our team with funding by a private Japanese company...Topknots were not replaced simply because they are badly damaged and needing restoration. In 1995 we run out of funds for doing so....
The monumnet (in ruins with 15 statues toppled on top de ahu was completely destroyed by a tsunami caused by the famous 1960 herthquake (Valdivia, CHile) that crossed the Pacific at jet speed and spread the matrix of the monument over a couple of hectares.
Old photos, 3D models, excavations and mapping permited a close a fiable restoration.
