Artificial Mound in Koochiching County, Minnesota.Grand Mound is the largest burial mound in the upper midwest United States. 25 feet tall with a base 100 by 140 feet. There are four other mounds on the site.
Managed by the Minnesota Historical Society (MHS) since 1971, the site had an interpretive center, trails to the mound site, and picnic areas. The society closed the site to the public, permanently, in 2007, reporting that the decision was based on the sacred nature of the site. However, many speculated that low visitor attendance and costs were the primary factors in the decision. The site is still managed by the MHS.
In 2008 the Rainy River First Nations Band, immediately across the border in Canada, approached county and city officials with a recommendation to reopen the site, voicing their support for educational programs at the site.
Although tourism websites in the area still mention the site, it is not listed as being open by either the MHS or Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, which runs the state parks system.
A National Register of Historic Places site.
