Ancient City in Tabasco.
A small Classic Era Maya city, the El Tortuguero site was identified in the early 1900's, and was never professionally surveyed or excavated before being destroyed as a limestone quarry for a cement plant. It is known today only by its inscription stones and other associated epigraphic remains.

Inscribed limestone stele fragments and other hieroglyphic evidence points to El Tortuguero having had its own dynasty for as short a time period as three generations (~620 AD - 699 AD.) The majority of enscriptions concern warfare carried out by its king, Bahlam Ajaw, most significantly, with Comalcalco, which may have been a rival of El Tortuguero in controlling trade from the gulf coast to the highlands of Chiapas. El Tortuguero also may have been associated (possibly as an ally or vassel state) with the much larger city of Palenque, only 50 km away.

A number of museums and collectors have inscribed artefacts from El Tortuguero. Most notably, the Museo Regional de Antropologia Carlos Pellier, has portions of several monuments, including Monument 6, known for its inscription including a date reference to the end of a Long Count Calendar cycle, 13th b'ak'tun, 21 Dec 2012.
