Modern Stone Circle in Missouri.
The University of Missour-Rolla Stonehenge was erected in 1984 by Professor David Summers & his team of students. The project, including the design, siting the stones, the actual manufacture, and final erection, was conducted and completed by students.

Although not a complete model, it is very interesting because of its correct astronomical orientation, and the explanatory bronze plaques on the stones. The stones were carved using a water-jet system developed by Prof. Summers, who said he believed the squared up, boxy aspect of the stones represents the way they had looked when they were first formed, and that what is seen now is the product of centuries of erosion.

On the summer solstice, the sun rises through the inner faces of the southwest trilithon and above a heel stone situated to the northeast. During the winter solstice, the sun rises inside the southeast trilithon. Because of the lay of the land to the east, these sunrises cannot be observed directly, but there are also sight guides for solstice sunsets, equinox events, sighting Polaris and an analemma calendar.

UMR Stonehenge submitted by Aluta : The plaque at the Rolla "Stonehenge," all in all, not a handsome creation. My favorite sentence in the official description on line: "The Rolla replica of Stonehenge incorporates many of the features of the original and includes two capabilities that the original did not possess." http://rockmech.mst.edu/stonehenge/historynew.html (Vote or comment on this photo)
