Kaminaljuyu
Kaminaljuyu submitted by SolarMegalith : Remains of Kaminaljuyu (photo taken on March 2005). Site in Guatemala (Vote or comment on this photo)
Kaminaljuyu is one of the longest occupied sites in Guatemala - the first settlement here was build around 1200 BC, while the final abandonment of the site was around 1200 AD. The heyday of the town came in so called "Miraflores period" (Pre-Classic period). There are also speculations about later interference of Teotihuacan, mainly due to Teotihuacan style pottery found in the tombs.

Most of the platforms, temples and buildings in Kaminaljuyu were constructed from bricks and clay due to lack of stones, what resulted in very poor state of preservation - most of the structures appear as grasy mounds nowdays. The first archaeological excavations were started here in 1925, the later ones in 1950s and 1970s.

The site is easily availible by buses from centre of Guatemala City - it lies in the Western suburbs called Colonia Kaminal Juyu.
