Montezuma Mound Group
Montezuma Mound Group submitted by AKFisher : McEvers Mound in Montezuma, Illinois in 1905 prior to its excavation. They found 1195 chipped, leaf-shaped blades averaging 5 inches in length and 3.5 inches wide. Most were white but others were red and black. A 6-foot long skeleton was also found with 72 very large shell beads. Photo courtesy Dr Greg Little, author of the Illustrated Encyclopedia of Native American Indian Mounds & Earthworks (... The Montezuma Mound group consists of 15 blufftop mounds overlooking the Illinois River in Pike County, Illinois near the town of Montezuma. Excavations took place in 1904 (Bushnell 1905; Fowke 1905; Bayliss 1907) and 1956 (Perino 2006), indicated the mounds were Early to Middle Woodland burial monuments dating to approximately 100 BCE. Many discoveries were made in Mound #1 (McEvers Mound) as confirmed by Perino in 1956 including over 1,100 bifaces (chert blades). A 6-foot long skeleton was also found with 72 very large shell beads.

Montezuma Mound Group
Montezuma Mound Group submitted by AKFisher : In 1904 the Smithsonian's Gerard Fowke excavated the McEvers Mound in Montezuma, Illinois. The site had 15 burial mounds in a straight line on a bluff overlooking the Illinois River. In the McEvers mound, named for the farm owner, a Hopewell crypt dated to 100 BC was found. At the bottom of the burial crypt they found 1,197 chipped blades in the shape of leaves. Photo courtesy Dr Greg Little, au... (Vote or comment on this photo)
