This small utilitarian museum displays only a fraction of a collection of Mississippian era finds from the Nodena culture of what is now north east Arkansas. Dr. James Hampson excavated the site on his family's plantation, Nodena, in the late 1920's.
He kept careful records and his documentation of both the type site itself and the artifacts were recognized nationally. Even at that time the site was much reduced by farming, but Hampson found the remains of multiple structural mounds, plazas, home sites and interspersed burials, all dating to late prehistoric period of the area (1400 - 1650 AD.) The museum is in the nearby village of Wilson and is an Arkansas State Park.
The museum describes the Nodena people's farming, village structures, and displays stone tools and the beautiful ceramics specific to the Nodena artistic invention. The artifacts are from the Nodena site and others of the area. Particularly stunning are white and red vessels and amazing effigy pots. The Nodena site itself is now protected and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, but is not open to the public.
See the museum website for hours and fees. A picnic area, playground and a parking lot are adjacent to the museum.
