The Tholos of Barro, as it is commonly known, is a megalithic monument built between 2500 BC and 2200 BC. It is one of the largest and best preserved monuments of its kind in the municipality of Torres Vedras. Implants itself on the hill of Pena surrounded by farmland and having it nearby a Catholic monument dedicated to Nossa Senhora de Fátima (known as Our Lady of Fatima – Mary, mother of Jesus). This is also the location of a local viewpoint of the surroundings.
This Tholos was classified as a Portuguese National Monument on June 16, 1910. It was discovered in the following of construction works conducted on the site in 1908. The discovery was made by a priest of French nationality (Paul Bovier Lapierre) who at the time was staying at the college of Barro.
About the architecture
The ruins indicate us that it had a large circular burial chamber oriented from North to South. The chamber was about 6 metres (20 feet) in diameter which was composed of overlapping blocks of stone forming a false dome. The whole building was surrounded by an outer circle of stones forming a mound (Mamoa) over the concentric chamber of about 13 metres (42 feet) in diameter. The intermediate space was filled with fine stones which revested the covering of the chamber and the access corridor is about 4 metres (13 feet) in length.
About the findings
Primitive peoples of the region deposited their dead in this place, seated and accompanied by various food and artifacts.
One year after the first discoveries began the exploration conducted by historian Eugene Jalhay and Félix Alves Pereira. They found artifacts of flint, polished stone, copper and bronze along with ceramics and bead necklaces in addition to the characteristic cylindrical idols which allowed us to identify this monument as belonging to an early stage of the Chalcolithic period, contemporary of the Castro of Zambujal. This site was probably used to bury a great part of the dead of this ancient settlement.
The rest of the findings consisted of polished stone axes, bronze rings, white limestone cylinders, two of which have representations of human figures and the remains of bones.
Most of the artifacts are currently exhibited at the National Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology, the rest of what was found in the vicinity is in the Leonel Trindade Museum of the municipality of Torres Vedras.
