Stone Circle in Co. Cork

On the NW slopes of Musherabeg Mountain, Knocknakilla, the "stone of the church", is almost a twin to the megalithic complex at Kealkil (cf): both sites consist of a five-stone ring, a pair of standing stones and a radial cairn. Of the two pillar stones, one is now prostrate the other being the dominant feature in the complex standing 3.7m in height. The stones would originally have been just over 3.5m apart and aligned NNE-SSW.

The stone circle at Knocknakilla is complete although a stone adjacent to the portal area and the axial stone are now prostrate. The internal measurement along the main NNE-SSW axis of the ring is just 3m.

This site consists of three monuments; a standing stone pair, a five stone circle and a radial stone cairn:

The standing stone pair is recorded as monument number CO048-095001-

On level patch of bogland, on NW slopes of Musherabeg Mountain. NE stone is prostrate. It measures 4.35m by 0.9m and is at least 0.3m T; hole at SE end may be socket. Second stone stands 3.3m to SW and leans to N; it is 0.7m L, 0.6m T and 3.7m H. Stones appear to have been aligned NNE-SSW. The five-stone circle (6469) stands c. 3m to NE and radial-stone cairn (6490) c. 13m to ENE.

The five stone circle is recorded as monument number CO048-095002-

Investigated by L.S. Gogan on 8th July, 1931 (Gogan 1931). No finds were recovered. Interior was flagged and great number of quartzite stones were found about entrance. Circle complete; axial and E side stone fallen since Gogan's time. Orthostats are 0.5m to 0.7m L, 0.35m to 0.5m T and 1.3m to 1.5m H. Internal measurement along main axis, aligned NNE-SSW, is c. 3m. National monument no. 420. This monument is subject to a preservation order made under the National Monuments Acts 1930 to 2014 (PO no. 165/1941).

The radial-stone cairn is recorded as monument number CO048-095003-

Ten radially-set stones (H 0.2m to 0.4m) mark perimeter of cairn (H c. 0.4m; diam. 3.5m). National monument no. 420. This monument is subject to a preservation order made under the National Monuments Acts 1930 to 2014 (PO no. 166/1941).

The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997).
