Dzibilchaltun submitted by davidmorgan : The Temple of the Seven Dolls through which the equinox sunrise shines. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Maya city occupied from about 200 CE until the Spanish arrived. Now famous for the equinox sunrise through the Temple of the Seven Dolls.

The name means "Writing on Stone." At around 800 AD, its peak population was possibly as high as 10,000 to 20,000 including the surrounding area. A much lower population was here at the time of the Spanish Conquest.

The area includes a cenote (sinkhole spring/well) where many artifacts have been found. There are also the ruins of a colonial church and hacienda.
