Xpuhil submitted by davidmorgan : Structure I - also known as the Building of the Three Towers. It constitutes an atypical example of the Rio Bec style due to the presence of the third, or central, tower. It has a maximum height of 18m and its centre line runs more than 53m along a perfect north-south alignment. From the site information board. (It looks a few degrees off on Google Earth). This city was rediscovered at the end of the 1930s. Since then, it has been known as Xpuhil, a Yucatec Maya place name which refers to the type of vegetation which grows around the principal waterhole at the site, which is a species of cattail [bullrush].

Xpuhil constitutes a good example of the architectural style known as Rio Bec. The ancient city was composed of 17 building groups which follow a disperse type of settlement pattern. There are groups formed by open courtyards surrounded by huge buildings, which are both separated from each other and integrated by smaller structures.

The buildings today make up the skeletons of what once were magnificent examples of the architecture of this type. All were covered with a stucco finish and painted with bright colours. In addition, they occasionally had rich decorations modelled in stucco.

Thus, one can see buildings made with a high quality of stone carving, forming mosaics which allude to novel forms of decoration of the structures, such as the profile serpents or the famous checkerboard type tablets, of both high and low relief.

The period of maximum splendour of the site has been dated for the years 500 and 750 CE. Its decline, or last periods of occupation, go back to 1100 CE.
