An important Maya city, inhabited continuously from about 300 BCE right through to the Spanish conquest.

The modern city surrounds the main features, which include the Kinich Kak Mo pyramid on its massive 4 hectare base (the largest structure on the Yucatan peninsula), the smaller Itzamatul pyramid (map), the Chaltun Ha pyramid (map) and El Conejo structure (map).

Three construction phases have been identified with it: the first building was the base graded with a stairway on each of its sides. Its bodies have a slight slant and its corners were rounded.
