The ancient Mayan city of Quirigua (Department of Copan) in the Sierra de las Minas, close to the River Motagua, flourished between 500-900 CE. The Mayan people were great builders of temples, pyramids and mouments; standing stones perhaps one of their greatest skills. They set up and carved many standing stones (stelas). One of the best known at Quirigua is Stela E.

The massive monolithic stone known as Stella E stands at approx 35 feet high (12 metres tall) and is estimated to weigh 130,000 pounds or 60,000 kilograms. Made out of sandstone, it is carved with Mayan god-like figures and tables of glyphs (Mayan picture writing). It probably dates from 771 CE. The carvings include the Cauac Sky diety receiving his mystical powers from the ruler of Copan, oddly called "Rabbit 18". He was eventually defeated by Cauac Sky who ordered that he be beheaded.

Originally the stone stood largerly undiscovered in the forests of the Sierra de la Minas, until it's discovery in the 1880s by Alfred P Maudsley (1850-1931) the British consul who explored the lost Mayan civilisations of Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras. At that time the massive stone was tilted - with the suggestion that it was, in fact, a phallic stone. Today the stela stands with five other carved stones and two stone animals at an educational exhibition centre at Quirigua.

Thanks Andy for putting this on the front page. I did have great difficulty in getting it's proper Longitude/Latitude because the place is not on any modern maps. I do have an old map with the place marked, but had to make a guess - though this now seems reasonably accurate by following the river and other features. Cheers.

Andy please try the following Latitude 15.274146 and Longitude 88.990974. This is a difficult one to say the least.
