Bandurria submitted by bat400 : Site in Huaura Province, Lima Region,, Peru. The two largest stepped platform buildings. The were built sequentially, the one on the left is the earliest. There are sunken plazas in front of each building, and unexcavated mounds out of the boundary of the photo to the left. Ancient Town in Huaura Province, Lima Region, Peru.
Part of the Chico Norte or Caral-Supe Culture. Structures include two large platform buildings and sunken plazas similar to ones found at Caral, but made from unshaped stones. They are estimated to be up to 4500 years old.

A construction method common to multiple sites in this culture is the use of woven bags or baskets containing many rough relatively small stones. These "shicras" were used as fill between walls or making up the bulk of plarforms. This method was in large buildings of adobe, unshaped stone and faced stone. It is believed this made the stepped pyramids resilient to the earthquakes common on the west coast of South America.
Finds include fishing nets and a set of cotton clothing.
A large residential area near the civil or ceremonial buildings has been nearly wiped out by a modern water project, leaving the structures around a ceremonial plaza.

Note: Possible human sacrifice found. Also see comment on news of similarities of this site to Caral, including its great age.

Thanks to the Anonymous commentor, who alerted us to this 11 minute film on Carel Supe. About 8 and a half minutes into the film there is footage of the Bandurria Site.

Re: Bandurria great age. by Anonymous on Wednesday, 28 May 2008
Noting that Caral-Supe is only 32 Kilometers away from this site, and that it's age is far older , I would have to agree with Alejandro Chu, that it would be the "Mother of Civilisations" in the Americas.
I would also speculate that this particular site gave rise to the Caral-Supe villages. Certainly a site worth investigating further, Can't wait for the next chapter in Peruvian Discoveries.

The above should have read This site- "Bandurria" is far older Than Caral-Supe- which is still under archaeological investigation.
Also Alejandro Chu-never stated that Bandurria was the "Mother of Civilisations".

Meanwhile The Archaeological Channel has produced an 11 minute youtube claiming Caral-Supe was America's Oldest Civilisation.

Human sacrifice remains found at Bandurria Peru by bat400 on Wednesday, 28 May 2008
(User Info | Send a Message)
Submitted by coldrum ---

Remains of human beings who were sacrificed more than four thousand years ago were unearthed by archaeologists at the archaeological site of Bandurria which is located in the northern province of Huaura, Lima. Bandurria is believed to be the oldest civilization in the Americas.

Alejandro Chu Barrera, director of the Archaeological Project of Bandurria, detailed that the remains found were a pair of legs, hips and a decapitated body whose skull hasn't been found yet. "These remains belonged to three people; two of them women who were probably killed for ritual purposes", he added.

Archaeologists have previously found remains at Badurria, but this is the first time these human remains show evidence that they were sacrificed.

Bandurria is located 140 kilometers from Lima and received this peculiar name because of a bird which inhabits this area. It was discovered by late 1973 but first excavations took place in 1977.

Bandurria great age. by bat400 on Saturday, 10 May 2008

A slightly different article on the same announcement by Alejandro Chu Barrera.

The archaeological site of Bandurria dating back 3200 BC (located in the province of Huaura, Lima) is considered the origin of ancient American civilization, said archaeologist Alejandro Chu Barrera, director of the Archaeological Project of Bandurria.

“Several radiocarbon datings done in the United states confirmed that Bandurria dates back from 3200 B.C., while Caral dates from 2900”, said the archaeologist.

The expert mentioned that the main reason for the development of highly organized cultures along the Peruvian coast is explained in the availability of marine resources which allowed to improve the population’s diet of the place.

Bandurria is located 140 kilometres from Lima and received this peculiar name because of a bird which inhabit this area. It was discovered by late 1973 but first excavations took place in 1977. It wasn't until July 2005 that the site begun to be excavated by a team of archaeologists and students from San Marcos National University, led by archaeologist Alejandro Chu.

Bandurria may rival Caral as oldest citadel in Americas by bat400 on Thursday, 12 April 2007
(User Info | Send a Message)
Submitted by coldrum---

A team of specialists headed by archaeologist Alejandro Chu has informed that structures found in Bandurria may be as old as structures found in Caral, Peru, deemed as the oldest citadel in the Americas.

The Bandurria archaeological center has been found to have similar structures as those found in Caral. Among the similarities are a circular plaza made with circular borders, and a ceremonial center made of clay, all in an asymmetrical style. According to Andina News Agency, the age of these structures may go back as much as 4,500 years.

The site was recently discovered in 1970, thanks in large part to climatic changes that uncovered some of the structures.
