davidmorgan visited on 23rd Aug 2017 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 4 Access: 3 An interesting Middle Woodland era site with a small on-site museum. It's a long walk around the place, and quite exhausting in the heat and humidity of August. There are still some mounds to be cleared of trees. It will look good when they've completed that project - the Eastern Citadel feature certainly needs clearing.

Artificial Mound in Madison County, Tennessee.
These mounds and earthworks were created in the Middle Woodland era, 1-500AD, and cover an area of 1200 acres. Most of the 15 mounds and a geometric earthwork appear to have been built for ceremonial use, with habitation areas away from the main groups of mounds.

Publicized by newspaper editor J.G. Cisco in the 1880's, the site was surveyed and mapped by Smithsonian Institution archaeologist, William Myer in the early 1900's. The Pinson Mounds are a National Historic Landmark and a Tennessee State Park. The mounds and natural features of the park may be reached by a network of trails. The park also features cabins, a camping area, and picnic grounds.

The location given is for the museum on the grounds. There are separate Megalithic Portal site listings for major mounds and earthworks within the park.
