Yaxuna
Yaxuna submitted by davidmorgan : Pyramid at the Northern Acropolis of Yaxuna, where the 12 bodies were found in 1993 - the end of the royal family. (Vote or comment on this photo)
A key old Maya city dating from the Middle Preclassic period (800 - 400 BCE). It was taken over by Coba in about 600 CE and linked to it by a 100km sacbe.

The whole royal family appear to have been massacred in ~400 CE by warriors from Tikal. It was sacked by Chichen Itza in the 9th century CE.

The city was excavated by local villagers and archaeological teams from Southern Methodist University, TX. The excavation website.

This comes up nicely in satellite view, you can make out the line of the sacbe heading off to Coba, from the building in the south-east corner.

Yaxuna submitted by davidmorgan : The beginning of the sacbe that leads to Cobá, 100km away. It took me a little while to find this structure in the undergrowth, I found the sacbe first and headed back. It's a lot more overgrown than when I visited 2 years ago. (Vote or comment on this photo)
