Ancient Village or Settlement in Sullivan County, Indiana
Hillfort. Ancient Settlement. Earthworks.

This site lies on a high bluff over the Wabash River, immediately north of the village of Merom, by the historic cemetery. This site has not been systematically studied since the late 1800s. Early reports of the site noted its location on an upland spur, bordered by ravines to the east and north, and a discontinuous earthen wall, with a narrow southern entrance bounded by earthen walls and ditches. For the most part these earthworks have been plowed away since the 1870's.

The interior of the spur contained at least 3 burial mounds containing stone box burials, and dozens of depressions, from building sites. This is thought to be a late Woodland and early Mississippian tradition site, as evidenced by stone box graves and shell-tempered pottery.

In 1992 a proposed project threatened the integrity of the site. Private citizens, the town of Merom, and the Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology worked together to ensure that the site would be left intact and protected for future generations.
