Artificial Mound in The South

The Nabers Mound Cemetery Mound site consists of a twenty-foot high conical mound with a cemetery at its base. The mound was placed on the National Register in 1975 with a historical marker placed by the Mississippi Department of Archives and History in 1997 (see photo). Believed by archaeologists to have been constructed during the Middle Woodland (Hopewell era) period (approx. 100 C.E.), the mound has not been substantially investigated or excavated. The site was acquired by the The Archaeological Conservancy in 2023, appears to be in excellent condition and has little evidence of vandalism or looting. There is a locally historic cemetery surrounding the mound and is one of the oldest in the area, with the earliest recorded burial in 1846.
