Ancient Temple in Quintana Roo, Mexico.El Rey ("The King" in Spanish) was originally an important religious and possibly market centre. Remains of over 40 Maya structures were uncovered, but only few of them are in reasonable condition. The site was occupied from 9th to 15th century BC, with it's heyday in Post-Classic period (1250-1530AD.)
Architecture of El Rey is quite similar to ceremonial structures in Tulum, Xel-Ha and Xaman-Ha. Most explorers / archaeologists of the 19th century were singularly unimpressed with the small site. The main excavations and renovations are associated with the INAH (Pacheco and Guala) in the late 1970's. Over a dozen temple platforms around three plazas, lying along a north-south axis. The middle plaza contains the best preserved buildings, including a platform with columns and a small temple (Structure 3-B) with two doors and a vaulted ceiling. Resources: Coe, Andrew, Archaeologial Mexico, Avelon Travel, 2001. TekTrek offers a labeled areal view and detailed map of El Rey briefly describing the major buildings. For a fee they offer downloads for MP3 players with an audio tour (about an hour) and images of the site and costumed reenactors.
