Strawtown Enclosure

Ancient Village or Settlement in Hamilton Co., Indiana.
The earthwork remains of a circular pallisaded village from the Late Woodland and Late Prehistoric Periods (1250 A.D. and 1400 A.D.,) known in this area as the Oliver Phase.

The village site earthwork remains are currently very low and fairly subtle, requiring you to walk around the parameter to clearly view it. The village may have housed 100 - 200 people, but may have been occupied only seasonally. There is also a nearby cemetery associated with the village.

Flotation analysis indicates that although a number of crops were grown and may wide food sources were used (little barley, goosefoot, maygrass, sunflower, and hickory, walnut, purselane) corn (maize) probably made up the majority of the food eaten by the people here. Faunal remains found include white-tailed deer, and small animals like grey squirrel, turtles, turkey, passenger pigion, as well as some remains from large animals such as elk and black bear.

There are approximately 140 other archaeological sites in the park’s 750 acres, although none have visual components. They range from Late Paleoindian (10000 BP) to historic sites, based on tool finds and ceramics. The most substantial occupation appears to be in the time frame of the enclosure village. Three of the sites are now on the National Register of Historic Places.

Lies within the Hamilton County Strawtown Koteewi Park with hiking and bridle trails, and non-motorized boat launch points. The on-site Taylor Center of Natural History is an educational and interpretive facility. It includes an exhibit room with some archaeological finds, a classroom, a laboratory to clean and catalog artifacts, and a curation room and research headquarters.

Strawtown Koteewi Park Prairie Hike

Come explore the ‘Koteewi-side’ of Strawtown Koteewi Park ! Koteewi (ko-TAY-wee) is the Miami Native American word for prairie, and we have been working with ecological engineers to restore the over 300 acre historical prairie that once existed on the site. Approximately 80 acres of prairie have currently been planted at the park, and our naturalist staff is excited about showing it off. Information regarding the prairie’s history and use by Native Americans and early European settlers, as well as identification of the many plants and their medicinal attributes, will be discussed during the hike. This hike will begin at the Taylor Center of Natural History.

Date: Saturday, July 28
