Skeleton Mountain Snake Effigy Site submitted by AKFisher : Archaeological depiction of the Skeleton Mountain stone Snake Effigy (196-ft long) located on Skeleton Mountain adjacent to Fort McClellan, Alabama by © Carol Hicks from the Alabama mound book. It was first recorded in 1976. In 2004 & 2007 archaeologists determined it was "built by 'Native Americans' as 'part of their animistic, spiritual/religious beliefs.'" Site excavation by Jacksonville State University Alabama in 2007 noted a lineal stone wall (possibly snake effigy), one U-shape structure, two small stone conical mounds, and a recently disturbed portion of the site.
