Ancient Settlement in Orange County, Indiana.
Within the Pioneer Mothers Memorial Forest is the site of a small prehistoric settlement, probably of several interrelated families. The artifacts and features found when excavated pointed to a Late Woodland tradition people designated the Oliver Phase. On the eastern side of the farmstead is a raised earthwork which is part of an original horseshoe-shaped earthwork facing Lick Creek.

The rest of the features cannot be seen.

Excavation show many artifacts of stone tools and pottery, and features of small buildings (post holes,) hearths, middens, and storage pits.

The Pioneer Mother's Memorial is a portion of the Hoosier National Forest that has not been logged since the state was settled in the 1820s. The Cox family owned this portion of land on Lick Creek, but preserved the forest. It has been designated a National Natural Landmark. The archaeological site is not promoted by state or federal publications, but several hiking and trail guide mention it.

Location is for the Pioneer Mothers Memorial Forest, not the site itself.
