Cave or Rock Shelter in Harrison County Indiana. A National Natural Landmark. This cave was used as a quarry by prehistoric man from 2200 BC and onward to the historic period.

Minerals quarried included Epsom salts (scraped from the rock walls with wooden paddles.) calcite (split from flowstone columns using antlers driven into cracks created by oak fires,) and most importantly, "Harrison" chert (crypto-crystalline quartz or fibrous chalcedony.) Tools made from Harrison chert have been found throughout southern Indiana and northern Kentucky.

Aside from the evidence of the mining itself, dried oak torches and torches made from hickory bark made up into bundles with twists of grape vine have been found in the cave. Tests with modern replicas indicate that these torches gave 5-7 hours of light.

Although Wyandotte Cave (and a smaller nearby cave) was purchased by the state from private owners, Department of Natural Resources found it difficult to manage the cave in addition to the rest of the Harrison-Crawford property. Now tours in the two caves are run for the state by a firm specializing in "show" cave management. Several tours are available (see the link, below.) The caves are closed in the winter months to protect several species of bat that hibernate within.
