Ancient Village in Morgan County, Indiana.
You can't quite call this a destroyed site, but there is nothing on the surface but a plowed field near the west fork of White River. There are no earthworks or foundations to be seen.

Like most Mississippian village sites in the region, this village was built on the bank of a river. The bed of White River has shifted slightly to the west and the village site has been plowed for many years. Finds of worked stone appeared over the years and the site was partially excavated in 1995 by Indiana University's Glenn Black Center. They found postmarks from several houses as well as hearths, storage pits, middens, and one burial. Numerous artifacts of worked stone, worked bone, and pottery shards were recovered. This appeared to be a seasonal village site, of a culture designated the Oliver Phase of the Mississippian tradition. The was no stockade fence or earthworks. The site had been abandoned before 1450AD.

Following the excavations the area was recovered with earth and has been planted each year since. The site is on private land, but because State Road 39 lies on an elevated roadbed leading to the bridge over the river, the entire site is completely visible at all times. There is a small parking area (daylight hours only) on the north side of SR39 on the east side of White River.

A point of clarification on the "Oliver Phase." These designations are based on similarities of artifacts and features found at the sites. Villages designated "Oliver Phase" are found in Indiana's White River watershed region. Dating puts them at the end of the "Woodland" tradition and the first part of the "Mississippian" tradition, but there is great overlap between radio carbon dates, and the type of artifacts and features. "Oliver Phase" sites are generally refferred to as "Late Woodland" but sometimes called "Early Mississippian."
