Stone Circle in Grand Traverse County, Michigan.
According to BLDGBLOG, in 2007, Mark Holley, professor of underwater archeology at Northwestern Michigan College, discovered a series of stones arranged in a circle 40 feet below the surface of Lake Michigan. One stone outside the circle seems to have carvings that resemble a mastodon—an elephant-like animal that went extinct about 10,000 years ago.

Archaeologists had been hired to survey the Lake's floor near Traverse City, Michigan, and examine old boat wrecks with a sonar device. They discovered sunken boats and cars and even a Civil War-era pier. But among these expected finds was a potentially-prehistoric surprise.

"When you see it in the water, you're tempted to say this is absolutely real," Holley told reporters at the time. "But that's what we need the experts to come in and verify."

Specialists involved in the case are skeptical and want to gather more info before making a judgment. The problem?

"They want to actually see it," said Holley. "Experts in petroglyphs generally don't dive, so we're running into a bit of a stumbling block there."

The formation, if authenticated, wouldn't be completely out of place. Stone circles and other petroglyph sites are located in the area.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The location given is for the town of Traverse City. The Tranverse City Record - Eagle confirms the boulder is within the confines of the 32 mile long Grand Traverse Bay, but the exact location is being kept secret to avoid vandalism or looting.

A link to a new report which doesn't seem to have any new info other than the sonar image which I don't remember seeing previously

Also a map of important underwater finds from the lake by the Grand Traverse Bay Underwater Preserve group (GTBUP), however it doesn't include the above stones

Re: Photos of possible Mastodon carving near Traverse City by Anonymous on Monday, 12 January 2009
Uh...there's no photos of ANYTHING he describes - the mastodon is a very taut stretch and looks most like random patterning, and there's certainly no stone circle. This sounds totally phony to me. The fact that they published a bunch of photos that clearly do not show that which is claimed indicates to me that they are banking entirely on less-educated readers' ignorance and credulity. Also the good doctor's opening blurb about himself contains this: "...where he was met with a thundering applause from other nations around the world." - an extremely common unsubstantiated claim made by crackpots the world over.

I was unimpressed by the round fish eyed photos which looked more like parallel lines than a stone "circle", but intrigued more on the stone circle on Beaver Island in Lake Michigan. This is not the only case of a Mammoth or Mastodon carving among the Native Americans. The Lenape Stone also has a carving of warriors fighting such a beast, but it's conveniently "lost", hence cannot be proven to be genuine.

Photos of possible Mastodon carving near Traverse City by bat400 on Sunday, 11 January 2009

Archaeologist Mark Holley was performing surveys of shipwrecks for the Grand Traverse Bay Underwater Preserve Council when the stone circle and separate boulder were found. The "masadon" carving appears to be most obvious when seen from a distance. At close range, numerous other cracks and lines confuse the image. There doesn't seem to be any information on the lines themselves - which might shed light on an obvious, man-made image, or an interesting natural pattern.
The original news stories focused on the carving and not on the stone circle.

The BLDGBLOG post is here
http://bldgblog.blogspot.com/2009/01/stonehenge-beneath-waters-of-lake.html

Unfortunately the PDF paper they link to hase been deleted.

Dr Mark Holley is the author of Inner Hebrides Crannogs on the Web http://www.crannogs.com and knows what he's talking about, I wouldn't rule this out as one of those cranky stories we get.
