Ancient Cross in Co. Clare

The Journal of Antiquities includes an entry for Dysert O’ Dea, Co.Clare, Southern Ireland, a monastic site 5 miles north west of Ennis on the R476 road, about 1 mile from the southern shores of Ballycullinan Lough. The Journal tells us: "There is nothing much else here in the way of houses, only a roofless medieval chapel that is built on the site of an 8th century Celtic monastery, founded by St Tola. But, there is a ruined round-tower, a splendid high cross, a holy well and some fantastic medieval stone carvings. A few miles to the north-west Dysert Castle has an Archaeological Centre that traces the history of the area from prehistoric times to the more recent." The JoA includes a photograph and description of the cross.

There are archaeological trails around this area which can be walked or driven - visit Dysert O'Dea Castle Archaeology Centre website, which tells us the trail is open all year round (the castle from May to September, adding: "The monuments (on the trail) date from 1000bc to 1850ad and include two Romanesque churches, the famous 12th century illuminated doorway and high cross of Dysert O’Dea, two 15th century tower houses, 1st millenium stone and earthen forts, holy wells, fulachta fiadh, proselytising schools, landlords houses, medieval roads and many more".
