LeGuMa visited on 1st Jul 2013 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 4 Access: 4 Parking space close to the main road, then a short walk up hill to the area. There are walking paths to other ancient places close by. No service what so ever. Amazing view to the west from the site, in spite of all trees and bushes which are reclaiming the surroundings.

Castro de Borneiro: This Castro is located pretty close to the famous "Dolmen de Dombate", which may be why it is often missed by the casual traveller.

It is believed by its C-14 dating to be one of the earliest Castros found in Galicia. It was excavated several times (in the 30's, late 60's and 80's) yielding many objects that have helped us to better understand the life of the Iron Age Celtic Spanish dwellers. The findings include: millstones, whetstones, metal molds, pottery in a very fragmented state, needles, rings, fibulae, knives, daggers, sickles, etc...

The settlement is located on the top of a small 200m high hill covered by reforested eucaliptus. It presents an oval perimeter protected by a significant rampart with an external ditch. Currently 75% of the total area of the Castro has been unearthed, with a total of 36 different structures. Some structures have also been found outside the ramparts.

To find this Castro, take the road LC-430 from Laxe to Baio. The Castro is signposted and can be accessed to the left near the bridge over the river "Os Muiños".

We found this whilst cycling thru Spain. It is a wonderfully evocative site which must of been an amazing place to live. We stayed for hours!
Nearby, Dombate was closed due to a dig - but we did get to quiz the archaeologists thru the railings!
