The archaeological site of Pessegueiro also known as Cemitério dos Mouros is a necropolis composed of a big group of cists, located near by a Bronze Age Habitat. The site is divided in two zones and protected by fences. Graves from the Iron Age were also discovered amidst the Bronze Age habitat area. This site is located in Porto Covo, in the Alentejo coast, alongside with the Atlantic Ocean. It was identified in 1972 by the Archaeological Working Group of the Sines area. The cemetery was the subject of extensive excavations assisted by Joaquim Vilhena between 1975 and 1979. The interior of the graves was the subject of excavation only in 1985, made by archaeologist Antonia Soares Coelho and archeology technician Júlio Costa. This monument is not yet classified.
About the architecture of the necropolis
This cemetary consists of a variable number of cist type graves, all built in sub-rectangular shape, rarely exceeding 1 m of internal length and covered with lid, mostly a monolithic one. Each of them were covered with a small tumulus with the base enclosed by pillars, that defined an enclosure in sub-rectangular shape. These tomb enclosures combine with each other, giving the monument as a whole the general appearance of a honeycomb. The tumuli have been mainly constructed with land from the residential area of the habitat. The material used in the construction was dune sandstone and schist.
About the burials
In general, these graves were used for individual burials, but in some cases occurred reuses of the funeral containers evidenced by overlapping burials. The dead were placed laterally in a contracted position (fetal) and not covered with earth and in most cases were accompanied by a ceramic container. Numerous graves haven't offered any estate, although there are no signs of violation.
In the eastern area of the whole site was laid bare a Neolithic funerary monument consisting of five individual graves. Mixed on that habitat from the Bronze Age was also found some graves from the Iron Age.
Other interesting facts
- This site is also known as Cemitério dos Mouros (Moorish Cemetery). In Portugal is usual to call everything that is not comprehended or out of the norm as Moorish
- Near by you can visit the beautiful Island of Pessegueiro where is possible to see a port built in the Iron Age that was later occupied by the Romans. You can also visit the ruins of a fort built on a later period. Below it was also found traces of quaternary formations containing lithic industries from the Paleolithic era.
