Ancient Village or Settlement in Alentejo

Monte Novo is a megalithic enclosure of oval plant, dated from the Late Neolithic and reused in the Chalcolithic as a fortified settlement, probably due to its defensive character. This monument is not yet classified.

About the megalithic enclosure
Sheltered from the northern quadrant winds and widely south facing the bay of São Torpes, the site of Monte Novo features over the coast and the coastal plain a great visibility, extended to the foothills of Serra do Cercal. This location was carefully searched for in the two phases of prehistoric human occupation of the site.
During the Late Neolithic, the population that inhabited the extensive settlement of Vale Pincel II have built in Monte Novo a megalithic enclosure and also sacralized the rocky outcrops of Sines.

About the settlement
The same venue was to be reoccupied during the Chalcolithic period, with housing functions. This second occupation is well documented by abundant ceramic and lithic artifacts, many of them related to agricultural activities and it corresponds to a reuse of the megalithic enclosure as a defensive structure.
