Next to the bridge over de ULLA river is a good info center about the archaeological findings in this area, where they have found offering bronze-age swords, Neolithic pottery, Roman and viking remains.
The ULLA river is a strategic entrance and one of the best ways to enter the inland from the sea. In this area we have seen many rowing boats ancient style. In Catoira are duplicate viking ships and there are re-enactment events.
When you sail from the north to south, this is the first large river entrance, where you can enter in de lee. After the Coast of Death a save place to enter en penetrate the inland by the river Ulla.
In the Atlantic version of the Odyssee (Janssen, Wilkins, Cailleux) this area (or in Padron) is most probably where Odyssee landed and rested for 3 days after a harsh trip over the ocean from Bretagne towards the south (between the Kikones and Cape Maleia).
We have also travelled the two borders of the peninsula's of the river Ria de Arosa (a kind of a fjord). I
- in Ribeira they went rowing onto the sea, very impressive.
- Near to beach Celeiráns is a rural area with many, many old megalithic stones, stone walls; even one road has the name of Rura the Muralla (road of the stonewalls).
- The river is deep too, In Vilagarcia is a main harbour with large ships.
- You can enter the river in a lee, so after a demanding sea (around the Coast of Death)
- the river is very demanding as it has many rocks and undeeps
- in the archaeological museum of Pontevedra are many bronze age findings to see (hoards, gold, pottery)
- there are petroglyphs, dolmen, standing stones, stonecircles
Traveling in the west part of Galicia area we have found signs of a Megalithic route with megalithic tombs. 20 tumuli have been preserved in the Chan do Cabral and O Rabós area. Some were pretty hard to find but beautifully located.
We have also seen a very old farmhouse, with standing stones used to support the line to dry the laundry. 3000BC integrated in nowadays life...
Gallicia has many paleo and megalithic remains and many well equipped museums.
