Miróbriga are a set of Roman ruins near by Santiago do Cacém, in the Setúbal district. This site was originally a settlement that arose during the Late Bronze Age and at the Iron Age, and it remained until the 4th century AD. These ruins are referred since the sixteenth century by André de Resende. The site is located on an elevation, provided with defensive structures, in a zone of favored visibility which allowed the territorial control of a vast region. It had several agricultural maritime and mining resources, probable reason why it should have played a commercial role of relative prominence.
The whole site is classified as IIP - Imóvel de Interesse Público (Estate of Public Interest.
About the Archaeological Complex
It is an extensive archaeological complex that has several nuclei: a commercial area, a spa, an hippodrome, a sanctuary and a housing area. This set was an important urban center in the Roman period, seating partially on an older agglomerate known as the Old Castle area. In the highest area of Miróbriga the forum was erected, in the center of which is visible a temple eventually dedicated to the imperial cult, as well as another consecrated to Venus. Surrounding the forum is an area consisting of several constructions of still-unknown functionality, resembling, however, two of the most common buildings in the provinces, namely the Curia and the Basilica. To the south was developed the commercial area, par excellence, characterized by the presence of several shops, the tabernae. One of the best preserved areas of the whole Miróbriga complex is the spa, composed of two buildings built at different times, possibly destined for feminine and masculine use. Between the first and second centuries AD there are the usual compartments in this type of building, an entrance area with locker rooms and games and a zone of cold baths - frigidarium -, and heated baths - caldarium and tepidarium. Relatively close is still a single full back arch bridge. Away from the center is also the hippodrome with a fully recognized configuration.
