On the 18th june of 2009, the Archaeological Center of A Caeira was opened, a new project developed for the Council of Poio, Spain. This center houses an explanatory project in which visitors can get to know the petroglyphs and rock art of the local area.
A visit to the Archaeological Center of A Caeira begins with the projection of an introductory video, leading to the exhibition with different panels with information about the petroglyphs and different aspects of the way of life of the Bronze Age. There are also replicas of different objects of the age like pots and weapons.
The exhibition is completed with a natural size replica of the petroglyph named “Pozo Ventura”. This copy has been realized by a 3D laser scanner. This representation was discovered in 1999 in a zone near to the location of the Archaeological Center, concretly in Liñares´s Mount. “Pozo Ventura” presents a few exceptional characteristics in the rock art of this zone of the Iberian Peninsula, resembling other pieces found in Ireland or in the west of France.
The visit to the Archaeological Center of A Caeira is completed by the projection of an audiovisual that narrates the way of life of the settlers of the Age of Bronze and an interactive game in which through a tactile screen it is presented a wide range of questions about this historical epoch specially aimed at children.
The visit to the Archaeological Center continues and is completed by the walk along the Archaeological Area of A Caeira, a recovered space in that there can be contemplated some of the most relevant stones of this important station of rock art. Its conditioning through the creation of paths, the construction of platforms to facilitate the vision of the petroglyphs.
The Archaeological Area is to the north of San Salvador de Poio, concretly in the southeast hillside of the Tomba Mount. A Caeira joins an exceptional set of engravings done in stone. They are known already from beginnings of the 20th century, thanks to the labor of the intellectual Ramón Sobrino Buhígas.
Two of the fundamental stones o the area are: “A Laxe das Lebres” (the stone of the hares) and “A Pedra Grande de Montecelo” (Montecelo´s big stone); the first one is a great panel with representations of deer. Two deers (posibly male and female), in symmetry of mirror are its central motive, being this one of the most famous images of the galician petro glyphs. The second, integrated by a numerous and flecked set of circular combinations, it constitutes one of the most surprising among the galician engravings.
