Chambered Cairn in Co. Sligo

Known locally as The Pinnacle as it sits atop Keshcorran Mountain at 359m above sea level. The cairn is un-opened, so it's not known if it has a chamber, but this seems likely. Seventeen caves are located on the western side of the mountain, the subject of many legends as Keshcorran is considered a fairy mountain. Part of the Keshcorran complex which has seven likely passage tombs.

The Hill of Kesh rises from the Plain of Corann at the western extreme of the Bricklieve Mountains in South County Sligo. The Mountain has been known throughout history and pre-history as a place of magic and wonder.

Kesh, or sometimes Keash, derives from Kish, the Irish word for wicker work or a wicker basket. In the landscape it usually refers to a wattle of wicker bridge over a stream or soft and boggy ground. The bundles of wattle are laid in the stream in such a way to allow the water to flow through them while the bridged is topped with stones and clay to make walking easier.
It is the same meaning as for Cliath as in Baile Ath Cliath for Dublin or Druim Cliath for Drumcliff in Sligo. A cliath is a bundle of wattles or a twisted wicker bundle.
Keash is the name of a low mountain in south east Sligo. The stream near it was bridged and this spot became known as Keash, the bridging place. Later the mountain was given the name as it was the nearest landscape feature near it. This has been the case in many places in Ireland.
I hope this helps. Michael

Does anyone know the origin of the word 'kesh' as used in Kesh cairn or Long Kesh?
