Modern Stone Circle in Aveiro

This is a modern, somewhat Stonehenge-like circle of uprights with lintels, with carvings on the uprights and a stone seat in the middle. Portugal is proud of its megalithic heritage and has a number of modern megaliths around the country.

There is a picture of it here on Flickr.

Translation of a plaque at the site:

"Seven blocks of stone with petroglyphic forms form a magic circle with its gate facing the source.

On the outer face, the earth side, defined by elements carved in high relief, are the connection of the man to the Mother Earth, illuminated by the Sun.

On the inner face, mysticism, represented by figures of low-lying gods who walk on Earth under the obscure mystery of the Moon.

The magic circle contains a table inside ...
Magic table of thanks for the gifts to the universe and life ..."

A further explanation and commentary on this page.

Using Google Translate, it reads:

"From druidism and Celtic culture, from the age-old heart of the stone, come to visit us the suggestion of a space different from all others, blend invented by a sculptor accustomed to running mountains in search of fossils of all animals missing millions ago of years, ornamental stones, massive blocks of hard or very hard stones of all colors and consistencies, hand-chopped with painful effort or cut to size, according to height, thickness and tonnage.

A space different from all means: space equal only to itself, invented by the suggestion of only imaginatively conceivable times, made by men who collected ferocious animals by hand, who protected themselves from the cold with the tanned skins of these animals, a day in the stone, as they drew the sun or the moon, the fundamental maternal vulva, the warrior, the hunter, the fallow deer, the fishes and all the main things, with profiles beforehand designed to face millennia.

Such men existed and left a mark on themselves as perhaps very few now can do so, entangled in the ball of the confused multitude of everything that does not stop in the head, because it does not rest in the look enough time and does not gain right to the silence deserved by the intimate contemplation."

Wonderful text! "entangled in the ball of the confused multitude of everything that does not stop in the head". This text also suggests to me that Stonehenge was an inspiration for this sculptured circle.
