The site is well guarded by a surrounding fence, the access is free and the monument is well protected and in good conditions. At the entrance there are some descriptive plaques with well resumed information about the monument. The access can be made by a dirt road, you can make the route by car but be aware that some parts of it are not in great conditions. There are signposts that indicate the way to the monument. Strange as it seems, this monument is not yet classified.
About the architecture
The 1st Phase
The pentagonal chamber was originally formed by five big pillars, the access was made through an off-centered, narrow and short corridor that was composed of several stone pillars with two big top slabs. Nowadays, only one is at place. All around the tomb was aligned a lying circle of slabs with about 5m in diameter. From these were constructed ramps made of smaller stones. Then, these ramps were completely covered with earth and it was only then that the top slabs were placed, to close the chamber of the tomb and the corridor. In the end the monument was again completely covered with earth. Outside it was built a patio made with small stones on which was built a small circular altar. The reasons for the construction of this altar are still unknown.
The 2nd Phase
The monument was eventually abandoned, but at about 6500 years back it was rebuilt and reused. All around it was built a circle (kern) of small slabs interspersed by large quartz and quartzite pebbles. Thanks to this upgrade this dolmen shone when the sun was shining, standing out even more in the landscape of the valley.
About the burials and other artefacts
Over nearly 3000 years were buried about 90 dead people in this place. The bodies were found accompanied with decorated schist plaques, bell shaped pottery, a tubular pendant with conical drilling, a green colored ball with tubular drilling, elongated trapezoidal microliths, a polished axe, reduced cooked pottery, arrowheads, abundant lytic polished materials, sickle elements, strips and plates. A good part of these artefacts can be visited in the Centro de Pré-História do Instituto Politécnico de Tomar (Center for Prehistory of the Polytechnic Institute of Tomar).
